Association of Zambians in Seattle, WA
The goal of the the Innovations Project by the Association of Zambians in Seattle, WA (AZISWA) was to improve health outcomes and address health disparities for members of the Zambian and Angolan communities, focusing on three goals:
- 1) COVID-19 Information Sharing and Vaccination Drive for members of the communities we serve.
- 2) Physical Wellness (Nutrition and Exercise) for which the focus is a whole person-centered diet and lifestyle medicine program through which the areas being addressed are (1) Good Food, (2) Joyful Movement, (3) Substance Control, (4) Connection, (5) Stress Resilience, and (6) Sleep.
- 3) Mental/Emotional Wellness for which the purpose is to bring greater awareness and education on the importance of Mental/Emotional Wellness for our community members while using the same platform to dismantle stigma against mental health.
AZISWA partnered with Maitano Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine, a certified Mental Health Therapist, and local faith leaders.
“By opening the door and allowing [people] to speak first with professional members (mental health and counseling) from our own community, community members were more accepting and ready to learn more. People’s eyes were opened to the fact that it is normal for them to experience mental health challenges and that other people go through them as well.”
